The beauty dish is a beautiful kind of light modifier. A beauty dish allows me to shape the light to bring out the most beautiful aspects of a model’s skin. A beauty dish has a broad, wide spread of light, so I use a grid in front of the beauty dish, which bundles the light to an angle of approx. 30 degrees.
This image was a quick snapshot of Jessica, one of my favorite models. Her hair against the background is great to see what the light does, because of the higher and clear contrasts.
I used the grid in front of the beauty dish to wrap the light around her to accentuate her facial expressions and to make sure no light enters wrong places. Absolute technical control is what I want and what I like. 🙂
Light from a beauty dish with grid enters the model’s skin in a fixed angle, also in parallel. The distance between the model and the beauty dish was approx. 2 times the diameter of the beauty dish, so Jessica was standing exactly in the sweet spot, to let the beauty dish make her skin flawless, contrasty and pure.
Make-up does a lot, but light makes the final image. A beauty dish in combination with a grid continues to surprise me, so that combination is absolutely a keeper here. 😉
